Different Roads

By Susan J.

My name is Sonnie and I’ve been a vice cop for over ten years. By doing this kind of job I fell like I’m doing something useful. Now and then I fail at the attempts I make to help the people of this city, but failure goes along with the job. I was having trouble with one particular case which involved a shipment of cocaine that was due, but I couldn’t get any information from the informants on the streets; I guess they were to scared to talk. I knew the person behind this operation - she was one of the most powerful ones around today. and all the informants were running scared.

One day as I sat at my desk doing paperwork and contemplating my next move, a man walked into the squad room. He was dressed in black jeans, red T-shirt, black boots and a black leather jacket; he wore his hair tied back in a ponytail, but most of all he was strikingly handsome. He walked over to me.

"Excuse me, but where can I find a Captain Lopez?" he asked.

I looked up at him.

"He’s not here right now, but he should be back any minute," I said.

"Thank you. I’ll wait." He said.

At that moment Captain Lou Lopez walked in. As he passed my desk he looked at me.

"Sonnie, in my office now," Lopez said.

One of the other officers in the room looked at me.

"What did you do now Sonnie?" he said.

"Hell if I know."

I got up and walked towards the office. I turned back and looked at the man who was waiting.

"If you tell me your name I’ll let him know you are here to see him," I said.

"Ramirez. Tony Ramirez," he said.

I nodded and walked into the office.

"You wanted to see me, Lou?"

"Yes. What progress have you made finding out the delivery date of the shipment?"

"There is no progress at this time. The streets are quiet and it’s driving me crazy," I said.

"I know; that’s why I decided to get some extra help for you."

"What? What extra help? Oh by the way, there’s a Tony Ramirez here to see you."

"Will you ask him to come in?"

I opened the door and motioned Tony to come inside the office.

"Mr. Ramirez, this is Captain Lopez," I said. They shook hands.

"Nice to meet you, Captain Lopez," Tony said.

"Likewise, Mr. Ramirez. This is Detective Sonnie Crockett."

We shook hands.

"Nice to meet you detective…did he say Crockett? Sonnie Crockett?" Tony asked.

"Yes, why?" I replied.

"No, nothing, it’s just there was a character on TV a while back…"

"I know, I know. There was a TV show called Miami Vice and the lead character was named Sonny Crockett, but there are four things that are different," I said.

"What?"

"Number one, that Sonny Crockett is not real. Number two, I am. Number three, I spell my name with an ‘ie’ at then end and number four, I’m a woman."

"Well, now that the introductions are over let’s get down to business. Now we need to find out where the delivery is gonna be so we can stop it before it gets to the streets,” said Lou.

"I told you I’d find out," I said.

"You can’t get any information, maybe Mr. Ramirez can," Lou said.

"Why would you think that he could?"

"Because no one knows me on the streets. That’s an advantage," said Tony.

"Have you ever worked this kind of case before Mr. Ramirez?" I said.

"No."

"Then what makes you so sure that you can get the information that I can’t?"

"I may be better at it than you."

My temper began to rise and I looked him right in the eye, which was a little hard to do since I was shorter than he.

"Oh shit, now you’ve done it," Lopez said.

"You think so? Well let me tell you something Mr. Ponytail! I’ve been doing this kind of job for over ten years! I have been struggling with drug dealers for over ten years! How long have you been doing this kind of job!?" I said.

"I’m sorry I didn’t mean to push the wrong buttons," said Tony.

"That’s an understatement. Now Sonnie, calm down and be nice," said Lopez.

"Okay, I’ll try," I said.

"Now Sonnie, I want you to inform Mr. Ramirez of the case and see if he has any ideas that may help."

"I will. I have the file on my desk. Come on."

"Okay," said Tony.

We turned to leave.

"Wait, Sonnie. I know that you’ve got a personal reason for wanting to stop this shipment but don’t let it cloud your judgment," Lopez said.

"Okay Lou."

"Nice meeting you Captain Lopez," said Tony.

"Call me Lou."

"I’m Tony."

"Come on Tony let’s talk," I said.

We walked out of the office and over to my desk. There was an empty desk facing mine.

"You can use that desk there if you want," I said.

"Thank you," he said.

Tony sat down. I handed him the file and he looked at it. After a few minutes he looked at me.

"Can I ask you a question?" he said.

"Sure. As long as you don’t ask me if I have a partner named Tubbs."

He smiled. "Captain Lopez said that you have a personal stake in this case. What is it?"

I took a deep breath. "I know the person who’s behind the whole operation," I said.

He looked at me. "You do? Who?"

"Someone I grew up with."

"I’m sorry." he said

"Don’t be. Listen I gotta get something to eat. Are you hungry?"

"Yes."

"Good, I’ll buy you lunch. Come on."

We got up and headed for the door, when the other officer in the room said, "Leaving early, Sonnie?"

"Yes."

"Captain’s pet!"

"Bite me!"

We left. A few days passed and Tony and I worked closely. To my surprise he was right, not being well known on the streets was indeed to his advantage and he was able to get the information that had eluded me. We were at the office when I got a phone call.

"Crockett. Who? What do you want? Why? Look you chose your path in life and I chose mine, if there is anyone to blame for your problems it’s you. Don’t worry about me, worry about yourself! Name the place and I’ll be there in one hour! Calling me a bitch is the best compliment you have ever given me."

I slammed the phone down. Tony looked at me.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

"I’m fine."

I got up and headed for the door.

"Where are you going?"

"I gotta get out of here. I’ll talk to you later."

I left. Lou came out of the his office and looked at Tony.

"Tony."

"Yes?"

"Follow her."

"Why?"

"I know her and I know her temper and with the look she had on her face someone might get hurt."

Tony got up and followed. He saw me speeding out of the parking lot. He got on his motorcycle and followed behind. I arrived at my destination which was a park near the beach. I waited by the railing near the edge of the cliff which overlooked the ocean.

"Well well, I didn’t think you’d show up."

I turned around and looked at the one person I despised the most. "I told you I’d be here. Now what the hell do you want?"

"I want you to let me go about my business in peace."

"Yeah right. Let you spread your crap around my city! I don’t think so!"

"Listen to you! You city! You sound like you own it!"

"As long as I carry a badge and live in this city I do own it! Monica, I want you and your shit off my streets!"

Monica started laughing. "I’ll do exactly what you say, Detective. Yeah right! You’re asking for a war, Sonnie."

"And you think you’re the person who can cause it?"

"You’re damn right."

I started laughing. "Then bring it on because you’re going down."

"Oh really. I think not."

"I know so. Now do us both a favor and get the hell out of my sight," I said.

"I think I will. I’ve got kids to check on. You know how it is when you have…Oh that’s right you don’t know anymore, do you."

I stared at her.

"Oh, if looks could kill I’d drop dead right now. See you later, Sonnie."

She walked away . As I leaned on the railing, I felt the tears roll down my face. Then I heard someone walk up behind me.

"So did you hear everything Tony?"

"How did you know…?"

I turned around and looked at him. "Your tree climbing skills leave something to be desired."

He reached out and wiped a tear from my face. "Are you all right?" he asked.

"No, I feel like jumping off this cliff right now. No one can push my buttons like her."

"Who is she?"

"No one special. Look I have to go. I need to just cut loose."

"Where can I take you, because I’m not going to leave you alone."

"I’ll be okay."

"No. The way your emotions are right now no one in their right mind would leave you alone. Come on, the place I’m staying at is not far from here."

He put his arm around my shoulder. We locked up my car and walked over to his motorcycle.

"Get on and hold on tight," he said.

I climbed on. "Oh geez I haven’t been on one of these things in years." I put my arms around his waist and I leaned forward. He turned and looked at me and smiled.

"Ready?" he asked.

"Yup."

He started the engine and we left. We arrived at a beach house and he parked the motorcycle in the garage.

"Here we are," he said.

We got off the bike and went inside. I was immediately drawn to the picture window and the ocean view it held. I walked over to the window and stared at the ocean. Tony walked over to me.

"Beautiful view isn’t it?"

"It sure is. I could stare at it for hours," I said.

"Would you like some wine?"

"Yes thank you."

"I’ll be right back."

He went to the kitchen and poured two glasses of wine. He came back and handed me a glass. "Here you are."

"Thanks."

We drank as we looked at the crashing of the waves on the shore. Tony looked at me. "May I ask you a question?" he said

"Sure."

"What did that woman say that made you cry?"

"She mentioned kids."

"Kids? Why would that upset you?"

"She has two kids and I lost one a few years back."

"Lost? How?"

"Drunk driver hit him as he crossed the street."

"I’m sorry. How do you know she has two kids?"

"She’s my cousin."

Tony stared at me in disbelief. "You’re not serious?"

"As serious as a heart attack. There have been many times I’ve thought of taking myself off this case, but I can’t."

I drank the glass of wine in one big gulp; Tony looked at me as I did this. I felt the kick of the wine and closed my eyes.

"Oh geez, what a kick in the head."

Tony walked me over to the couch and we sat down.

"You okay?" he asked.

"I’m fine, just give a minute."

"Where do you live?" he asked.

"Not too far from here."

"Not on a boat?" he said laughing.

"No, I don’t live on a boat and I sure as hell don’t have a pet alligator named Elvis."

We started laughing.

"You must get teased a lot because of your name."

"I do, but I’m use to it."

Tony moved closer and gently kissed me.

"What was that for?" I asked.

"I’ve been waiting to do that ever since you got pissed at me in Lou’s office on the day we met."

"Oh."

He kissed me again more passionately and I felt myself floating. I thought that I should maybe stop him from kissing me but he felt so good and I needed to feel wanted as least for awhile so I let him continue.

"I want to make love to you Sonnie," he whispered

"No."

"Why?"

"For a number of reasons."

"What reasons?"

"Number one, we’re partners."

"So?"

"Number two, we haven’t known each other that long. Number three, we’re working on a case together."

"So?"

"And number four, it’s not the right time, oh how I wish it was! But please be patient. Okay?"

He smiled and kissed my forehead.

"Okay."

The next few days were rough. We were running around getting things ready for the day of the bust. Finally the day arrived that I had been waiting for. We all assembled in the squad room for one last meeting. Everyone one was talking at once.

"People, quiet down please," I said.

The room quieted down and now all eyes were on me and Tony.

"Okay, I’ve assembled everyone into four teams. Each team has a certain job to do. Team one will be on the roof of the warehouse keeping an eye out for the delivery vehicle. Team two will be parked on the street keeping nosy people out of the way. Team three will be with Tony and I who are team four. Everybody must be on the alert and do not, I repeat…do not go in until you get the word from either me or Tony. Everybody understand?"

"If anybody goes in before they are told it will cost us everything and maybe it will cost you your life," Tony said.

Since it was a hot day I was wearing a almost sheer blouse.

"Are there any questions before we break this gathering up?" I said.

"Yeah I got a question." said Rosie, one of the women officers

"Yes Rosie?" I said

"That blouse you’re wearing, did you buy that somewhere or did you steal it from a gay man?" she said

Everyone started laughing.

"Well Rosie your old man bought me this blouse and it wasn’t even my birthday."

The room roared with laughter. We all left and went to the warehouse.

We arrived awhile later and got into position. Tony and I were nearest to the door where the delivery was to be made. Tony noticed that I was a little nervous.

"You okay partner?" Tony said

"I’m fine thanks. I wish this was over with."

"It soon will be."

He smiled and touched my shoulder. He looked around to see if anybody was looking, when he saw the coast was clear he kissed me quickly. I smiled back at him.

The delivery truck arrived in the parking lot of the warehouse and we got ready to move. The truck parked near the warehouse door and stopped. The large door opened and four men stepped from the building. Three men stayed back while the one approached the driver of the truck. They talked for a minute and then the driver started to back the truck into the warehouse. The large door closed as soon as the truck was inside. I looked at Tony.

"Let’s get closer look," I said.

Our team moved closer and the other teams were waiting for the signal. Tony and I got closer to the door. We took our guns out and got ready to move in.

"Are you ready, Sonnie?" Tony asked.

"As ready as I’ll ever be. Get the teams ready to move in." Tony took out the hand radio.

"Everyone be ready to move in," he said.

All the officers waited, meanwhile inside Monica was overseeing the delivery. She saw one of her guys check the drug for purity and then he looked at her.

"It’s grade ‘A’ stuff boss,’ he said.

"Great! Now let’s get it out of here and ready for processing. It’s definitely snowing in LA today!!" she said, laughing.

Outside the police were still waiting.

"Now!" I said.

"Move in now!" said Tony.

All the teams moved in. As they went through the door all the men inside started running. I ran in and saw where Monica was standing. Tony and I walked over to her.

"I told you I’d catch up with you, cuz," I said.

"You’ve got nothing on me Sonnie," she said.

"I’ve got plenty. Accepting narcotics ring a bell."

"I never touched it!"

"No, but you’re taking possession of it," I said.

Monica walked slowly towards Tony. "Hmmmm very nice," she said as she walked around looking him over.

"Excuse me?" Tony said.

"Oh nothing, just admiring the view," Monica said. When she came up behind Tony she stuck a gun in his back. "Now let’s see who’s gonna win this round," she said.

"Put the gun down," I said as I aimed my gun at her.

"Ooh you gonna shoot me cuz?" Monica said.

"Not if you let him go."

"Oh right! He’s quite a catch," She said while running her hand over his butt. She winked at me.

"Quit fucking around Monica! Let him go and we’ll work something out," I said.

"I don’t think I believe you, cuz."

She then grabbed Tony by his ponytail with her left hand as she put the gun under his chin. I knew what she was capable of when she was desperate. I looked at Tony and motioned with my eyes for him to fall to the floor, this would take him out of the line of fire.

"Come on Monica think about what you’re doing! You’re threatening a cops’ life!" I said.

"So what!?"

"Think about your kids! What’s it’s gonna be like for them not to have a mother?”

"What are they going to think if their mother is in prison!" she said.

"They can say that she’s alive!"

I knew Tony had to move out of the way and quick. I looked at him again and then he suddenly fell to the floor. Gun shots rang out.

The next thing I remember I was in a hospital bed and Tony and Lou were on either side of me.

"Where am I?" I said.

"You’re in the hospital. You were shot." Lou said.

"What happened?"

"You got hit with two bullets from Monica’s gun," said Tony.

"What about her?"

"She got hit with one."

"Is she…?"

"No, she survived."

"The shipment?"

"We got it all. Don’t worry," said Lou.

"Good."

"I’m going to leave. I’ll see you later," said Lou.

"Okay."

Lou left. Tony sat on the bed and held my hand.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Okay. When can I leave?"

"The doctor said not for a couple of days. You had me worried, after you got shot you didn’t move. When I saw you open your eyes it was a great relief."

He leaned down and kissed me gently. Lou came back into the room.

"She’s gone!” he said.

"Who?" I said.

"Monica. I went to check on her and she’s gone!"

"Wasn’t there a guard posted at her door?" asked Tony.

"Not a reliable one," Lou said.

"Don’t worry she won’t go too far. She’ll be back," I said.

"Who says?"

"I do. I know her too well, she’ll be back."

The phone rang and Lou answered it.

"Hello. Sure just a minute. It’s for you."

He handed me the phone.

"Hello" I said.

"Hello cuz."

"Where are you?"

"As far away from you as possible. I really want to thank you for the bullet you gave me."

"Likewise."

"Well, I just wanted to make sure that you were still alive."

"Yes I am."

"Well I better go, but remember I’ll be back."

"I’m sure you will. And I’ll be waiting for you."

"Yes I know you will. Remember, after all, tomorrow is another day.

"Okay Scarlett, and contrary to what Rhett said, Frankly my dear I do give a damn and I’ll get you next time I see you. Count on it."

"We’ll see, we’ll see. Catch you later, cuz."

"I will catch you later, cuz."

I handed the phone back to Lou, to hang it up.

"Was that her?" asked Tony.

"Yes. She’s gathering some more power and she’ll come back in full force," I said.

"And we’ll be waiting for her when she does," Tony said.

"We will?" I said.

"Yes ‘WE’ will. I’m not going anywhere."

"I better leave.. See ya," said Lou.

He left.

"I thought he’d never leave," said Tony

We laughed, and as I laughed I felt the pain in my shoulder.

"Oh shit, that hurts!" I said.

"Well, let me help you forget the pain for a little while,” he said.

"How are you going to do that?"

"Oh, like this." He kissed me. He then looked at me straight in the eyes and whispered, "remember, I’m not going anywhere."

"Can I count on that?"

"Yes. As much as you can count on this."

He kissed me again more passionately and I knew that he was telling me the truth. This was indeed going to be an interesting partnership.
